Concrete planters have their charm; the contrast between the simple grey color and the plants. Also, concrete as a material, was very popular in mid-century modern design, which is always in style.
In this tutorial, we will show how to create a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing concrete planter. These planters are surprisingly easy to make too, so it can be a great activity for kids. It is one of our favorite DIYs because concrete planters can fit into any home decor and can be made with stuff most people already have around the house (which makes it very sustainable and waste-free).
Boho Chic Concrete Planter DIY: Materials
This DIY doesn’t require expensive materials – you probably already have most of them around the house.
- Cement Powder
- Large plastic bowl
- Smaller plastic bowl
- Water
- Vaseline
- Painting brush
- Spoon/Stirrer
- Sandpaper
- Paint
- Stones (or another heavy object)
Concrete Planter DIY: The Process
1. In the larger bowl, mix about 5 parts cement powder with 1 part water and stir until you have a thick paste mixture.
2. Brush the smaller bowl with Vaseline inside and outside (It will help you take the planter out more easily after it gets dry).
3. Put the smaller bowl in the large one, and push it downward, in a way that will creep up the sides of the larger pot as you push.
4. Now, put the stones (or any other heavy object) in the small bowl. It will assist the cement to stick up instead of popping it back out and leave overnight to dry (Important).
5. After the concrete is dry, gently, separate between the bowls and take out the concrete planter.
6. At this point, you can sand the concrete a little bit to straighten it out, paint or spray, and you’re done!
You can now plant your favorite plants in your concrete planters once they have been painted and are ready.
This concrete planter DIY can be made in any shape or size, which makes it perfect for planting succulents!
